Cleanse your Skin with a Dry Body Brushing

April 1st, 2009

This is the time for garden cleaning and getting ready for planting bew seeds or plants, spring house cleaning and getting rid of clutter. It seems that spring brings this in us. A desire to get rid of the old to make room for the new.

It is no different with our skin and body. Last week I introduce you to a very easy to do cleanse by Richard Forish a Health Practionner from California. I do not know if you took the challenge of doing a 2 weeks cleanse following his advice. I did. I am only on day 2 and really realized how much processed foods I have in my diet, even though I thought I do not eat  processed foods ….

Back  to today’s topic. Cleansing the skin with a a dry body brush.

It is a great  way to detoxify the skin. It removes dead cells, improve blood and lymph circulation. So when combine with a cleansing diet, it will help the body dispose of the internal toxins.

What do you need

  • Natural bristle brush, a loofah sponge or a hemp mit.

How to Proceed

  • On your dry skin, use long upward sweeping movements starting with your feet and working your way up your legs, accross your hips and bottom. Make sure that your strokes are always towards your heart.
  • Then in a clockwork motion go over your stomach, down your arms and towards your fingers.
  • Do  not go over your breast, face or throat. The skin is very thin and vulnerable in those areas.

Once you are done, you can gave a nice warm shower or a relaxing bath.

Add Dead Sea salts to your bath. Magnesium and other essentials minerals will  stimulate your lymphatic system which help with the removal of toxins through the pores on the skin. A 20 to 30 minutes soak is best for maximum results. Make sure you drink plenty of good quality water and do not be surprise if you feel tired afterwards.

Detoxification can be quite draining on the body and make sure to schedule at least 1 hour of relaxation time afterwards.

Honey is an amazing natural product. In ancient Greece, it was called the food of the Gods. Most of us use it internally and eat it on toast or as a substitute for sugar in hot drinks and desserts.

You can also use it to make natural a natural face mask. Particularly beneficial to oily skin, honey will also restore mositure to dry skin

Four Healing and Beautifying Properties of Honey You Need to Know

  • Rich in Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), it removes the dead cells accumulating in between skin cells.
  • Help fight the free radicals, erase fine lines and prevent or reduce wrinkles

  • Great anti aging, honey stimulates the production of collagen and elastin

Remember when you get ready to apply your face mask to schedule some quiet time. Around 20 to 30 minutes. It is really important to be relaxed and undisturbed while the mask is on your face. You will get more benefit out of your little home spa experience and feel truly rejuvenated.

Spring Cleansing for Healthy Skin

March 23rd, 2009

Our skin is the largest organ we have and connected to our digestif system. A gentle but good cleansing program will help clear you skin as well as your over organ.

They are a lof of cleansing programs available. I like this one because it is simple and does not require any drastic changes in the diet but a few adjustments.

Spring:  The Best Time to Cleanse and Detoxify

Spring is the season of regeneration, growth and renewal. Like no other time, the spring of the year gives us one of the absolute best opportunities to improve our health. As part of nature, we have access to the power of the spring. And by riding this seasonal wave, we can use this time to enhance and speed our process of healing.

So, how do we ride the wave?  Spring Cleansing.

We can’t bring in the new until we throw out the old.  More specifically we can’t revive our bodies without cleansing our cells, tissues and organs of accumulated toxins, debris and infections.  And the spring of the year is one of the best times to do it. Traditional Chinese medicine described this spring phenomenon 5,000 years ago. The Chinese physicians observed that the major organs of detoxification—the liver and gall bladder—reached the height of their activity (with some of the best therapeutic results) in the spring.

Chinese medicine is right about this seasonal mystery of nature; this secret of spring cleansing. I have personally done dozens of cleanses, and supervised thousands of others.  Invariably, the best results are in the spring. (Fall is second, and the absolute worst time is winter. I have done many summer cleanses and they are always ho-hum.)

In our culture, the liver and gall bladder system is the most overworked and the most in need of help.  It is rare to find a new client that has a balanced liver and gall bladder system. In fact 80% of new clients start with a toxic, overloaded liver and gall bladder.  And virtually everyone with chronic illness needs significant work on these organs.

But working on the liver and gall bladder at the right time, will return the greatest reward in improving our health.  And now, the spring, is the right time to do this work.

The rest of this newsletter will give you a better idea of my model for successful spring cleansing. It includes an example of the kind of diet required during the two week cleanse process, some lifestyle change suggestions, as well as information about how and why all of this works.  It also gives you important information about how to do, and how not to do a cleanse.

Cleanse and Detoxify:  But do it Safely!

Cleansing or “detoxification” is a complex subject. First and foremost you must be aware that a cleanse program, done improperly, is worse than no program at all. Unfortunately, I see far too many people who undertake vigorous detoxification programs and end up worse off than when they started. This is needless. It can be avoided with correct preparation and guidance.

Successful Detoxification =  Good “Drainage”

The key to a good detoxification program can be summarized in one word: Drainage. This concept, emphasized in European Biological Medicine tradition, is simple but often missed, (especially among many health care professionals). It is this:  Detoxification won’t be successful unless toxins are removed from the body (in stool, urine, and sweat), as fast as they come out of storage (from the tissues into the blood.)  This concept is extremely important to understand.

Think of it this way:  Imagine you are about to clean a house that has been lived in but not cleaned for 30 years. There is clutter and trash everywhere. Where do you start? First: Open all the windows and doors. Second: Clear wide paths to the exits. Third: Throw out the superficial debris. Lastly you work on the older, stored garbage.

The exit doors of the body are the organs of excretion; the bowels, kidneys, liver, gall bladder, lungs, skin and lymph. We open these first and we keep them open during the entire detoxification process. If we don’t, we pay.

Poorly designed detoxification programs, (like juice fasting or herbal and/or chemical “chelation therapies”) do exactly the opposite:  They mobilize all of the older, stored garbage first, and give little or no attention to the organs of excretion.  The results are unpleasant and damaging as huge amounts of stored toxins are liberated into the bloodstream, with no way to get exit the body. These toxins eventually settle somewhere else in the body.  At best you have wasted your time and energy.  Often you are further behind then when you started.  So how do you insure adequate drainage and achieve a successful cleanse?

Good Drainage Requires Adequate Energy

Our drainage organs, like every other organ and tissue, need energy to work. So the first necessity for good drainage is to have good energy.

Those of you who have been clients for a time know that your winter program is partly designed to build your vital energy reserves. If you have been successful in building your vitality, then you are now in position to take best advantage of the spring cleanse.

But you also need to make sure that you have good energy throughout the cleanse. Maintaining sufficient energy with superb drainage gives the best result. These are the

principles that must be followed. In my spring programs I accomplish this for you with diet, lifestyle change suggestions, and a tailored supplement program that finds the right balance of Energy, Drainage, and Detoxification.

Spring Program Cleanse Diet

Here is an example of what the diet looks like (not for everyone), with a following discussion of the principles underlying the dietary choices:

You will allow 3 days to gradually attain the following diet, (so you do not shock the body). Stay on the diet one week. Then take 3 days to transition back to a normal diet. The whole process takes two weeks.

Eliminate:  Alcohol, caffeine, sugar, maple syrup, brown sugar, heated honey, corn syrup, fructose, dried fruits, fruit juice (except as described below), baked goods, bread, pasta, chips, crackers, all dairy products, all oils (except as described below), roasted or fried nuts, soy products, diet anything, sodas. No grains except millet, rice, buckwheat, quinoa. No foods to which you have a known allergy or sensitivity, that give you gas, indigestion, or otherwise give you any discomfort, (even if these foods are listed below).

Eat freely:  The following foods must make up at least 50% of your diet:  All non-starchy vegetables, especially the bitter, dark green, leafy types (dandelion greens, endive, parsley, beet tops, lettuces, chard, and spinach).  Also good: green and red peppers, avocados, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, and asparagus. All sea vegetables, such as dulse, kelp, sea fronds, nori, hijiki, wakame, and arame are encouraged. Vegetables may be eaten raw or lightly cooked, with a dressing of extra virgin olive oil and fresh squeezed lemon juice or raw apple cider vinegar. Fresh garlic, onions, cayenne, ginger, stone ground mustard, and raw horseradish (“Bubbies” brand) may be used as seasonings. Raw, unfermented sauerkraut (“Bubbies” brand) or other raw, fermented un-pasteurized vegetables (Kim Chi) should be used ¼ cup day. Miso (from rice only) is allowed. Fresh fruits must be raw and may be used up to 2 pieces per day.  Apples, citrus, and berries are best. Do not mix raw fruits and vegetables. Fruit juice may be used as a flavoring only and no more than 1 cup per day.  Raw, unheated honey may also be used as a flavoring, up to 2 teaspoons/day. Nuts must be raw, soaked in water 6-8 hours before eating, or slightly roasted up to ¼ cup per day. Allowable nuts include walnuts, almonds, filberts, pecans, pine nuts, and hazelnuts. Herb teas without caffeine are allowed. Some dilute green or white tea may also be used.

Minimize:  The following foods must be limited to less than 50% of the diet:  Non-gluten grains (rice, millet, quinoa, and buckwheat), beans, potatoes, starchy vegetables (including cooked carrots and beets), animal foods (including meat and eggs).

As you can see the cleanse diet is divided into three categories:

  1. The “Eliminate” category. These are low-nutrient, highly toxic foods, stimulants, hard to digest foods, and/or possible allergens. They generally deplete your reserve energy and interfere with good drainage.

    1. The “Eliminate” category. These are low-nutrient, highly toxic foods, stimulants, hard to digest foods, and/or possible allergens. They generally deplete your reserve energy and interfere with good drainage.
    2. The “Eat Freely” Category. These are mostly cleansing foods.  They will help release toxins from tissues, cells, and organs into the blood. If you are experienced in cleansing and have built lots of reserve energy you can eat more than 50% of these foods. If you are more of a beginner you probably want to keep it at about 50-60%.
    3. The “Minimize” category.  These are foods necessary to support your vital energy throughout the cleanse. These foods are not especially cleansing, except that they keep all of the organs and glands supplied with energy and therefore working optimally.  You should eat enough of these foods (up to 50% of your total diet) to feel strong and energetic throughout the cleanse.

Lifestyle Change:  Rest, Sleep, Cut Activities

Another way to optimize your energy is to conserve it.  Don’t overdo exercise. Cut back on work and other activities. Minimize TV and news. Get more sleep. Take a vacation from excessive thinking, worry, and emotional reaction. Retreat into the core of your body. Take time to listen to and bless your heart, your gut, your liver. As your internal organs get some focused, loving attention they will relax and energize. And it will be much easier for them to release unresolved emotional patterns and the physical toxins that accompany these patterns. The cleanse is a great opportunity, often missed, of multi-dimensional detoxification and deep healing at every level of our lives.

Lemon and Olive Oil Drink

This is refreshing and synergistic drink that is a great dietary drainer of the liver, gall bladder, lymph and intestine. It thins the toxic bile in the liver and increases its flow through the gall bladder. The increased bile flow through the gall bladder and into the intestine stimulates gut peristalsis and drains the intestine. This in turn allows for an excellent drainage of the lymph. The domino affect for drainage. It is one of many possible additions to your cleanse program.

Five Reasons for Dark Circles Under the Eyes

March 17th, 2009

1. Pigmentation. Blame your parents for this. Increased pigmentation under the eyes is genetic. Fortunately, you can beat your gene pool with treatments we will talk about further in the article.

2. Bone structure. If you have eyes that are deep set you will be more likely to look as if you have circles under your eyes. This is often an optical illusion caused by shadowing from the way the light falls on your face.

3. Vascular Inflammation. The skin under your eyes is extremely fine and translucent. The tiny blood vessels, or capillaries, in this area are numerous, and they lie very close to the skin surface. An inadequate nutritional intake, allergies, late nights, and cigarette smoke will all cause these tiny blood vessels to dilate. Once these vessels dilate, blue circles will appear under your eyes.

4 Poor Digestive Systems A sluggish liver, tired kidneys will not performance the elimination process properly.More commonly, dark circles under the eyes can be a sign of to much toxins in the body.

5 Lack of Sleep

Not sleeping properly or not enough sleep can cause dark circles under the eyes.

The tea bags also contain anti-oxidants which have many beneficial properties. Be sure to let the tea bag cool first and squeeze out the excess fluid.

Feeling Good In Your Skin Start with You

March 11th, 2009

Kate’s life was not going too well. A long-term relationship had just finished. The stress of the break up combined with career pressures was written all over her face. To make matters worse, some of her good friends were all going to a beauty spa at the Dead Sea for a little pampering. Kate was not able to attend due to a punishing work schedule.

Her friends had chosen the Movenpick resort in Amman Jordan as their vacation destination after much research., . “The Dead Sea is 730 m below sea level and has a 33% concentration of salts and minerals” said Kate’s friend Jane. “All these minerals are going to promote our blood circulation and remove all the toxins from our skin. My skin is going to be taut, tight and younger looking. ”

Jane went on to explain that the concentrated minerals would clean all the impurities from her skin, acting as a facial cleanser and help removing dark circles from under her eyes. Kate thought the claims sounded a little too good to be true. She was also a teensy bit envious that she was not able to accompanying her friends.

While Kate’s girlfriends were away, she resolved to get her love life back on track and decided to sign up for an online dating service. Kate was impressed with the site  and plentiful articles about re-entering the dating world. After reading about how not to repeat her romance mistakes, Kate felt she was almost ready to date again.

Kate was astonished at how fantastic her friends looked when she collected them from the airport. Her friends were positively glowing. Their skin looked so hydrated and plump with moisture that Kate felt old, tired and wrinkly standing next to them.

“I am never going to get a new man competing with the likes of you!” she exclaimed. Kate felt really disheartened. After dropping her friends off, Kate went home to her laptop. On her screen she had a message from an interested prospective date. After sending off an email Kate had her inspiration. “If I can’t go to the Dead Sea, maybe the Dead Sea can come to me!”

Kate hopped on line and started looking. Sure enough, there was an entire section dedicated to Dead Sea facial care. Once again, it was remarked upon how the minerals made a good facial cleanser and moisturizer. Kate quickly ordered the range of needed cosmetics and felt her spirits rise.

The products arrived and Kate started using them. In the meantime, the email correspondence with Steve was heating up. Finally, he suggested meeting in person. Kate glanced in the mirror and saw in the reflection a glowing, positive woman smiling back at her. A date was arranged.

Upon meeting Steve, Kate was pleasantly surprised when he said that her photo didn’t do her justice and that he had been expecting someone a little older. At that moment, Kate made two resolutions, to continue using Dead Sea products, and to encourage all her single friends to join a dating site.

Beauty Start Within

March 4th, 2009

Throughout the centuries, women have looked for ways to increase their beauty. Call it simple vanity,  keeping up with friends, or wanting to attract a mate. These are possible reasons for trying to preserve youthfulness and increase beauty. It’s possible that we want to do it just for ourselves – we want to look in the mirror and see a radiant face smiling back. Maybe we will be bothered by wrinkles as we get older, or maybe we won’t be. We may see wrinkles and lines as a badge of honor for having withstood the trials that we’ve been through. Either way, it really doesn’t matter what our motivation is – we want to like what we see.

Whether you are a twenty year old woman, or you’re seventy-five, you can like what you see each day in the mirror by keeping  yourself looking vibrantly alive. How?
This comes from the inside. Your diet and lifestyle will determine your health and that will reflect of the look of your skin.
Who you are, what you stand for, your passions and what makes you alive will also affect your overall well being, your health and your skin.
Skin care, cosmetics and products are only one part of the equation. An important part for sure but always remember that your skin is a reflection of your state of health.

When you combine an excellent skin care routine and a healthy lifestyle, that reflection in the mirror will always smile at you. Certainly, each woman’s needs are different depending on her age. Most women at seventy-five aren’t too worried about acne flare-ups. But the bottom line at any age is a consistent skin care regimen with products that you love to use.

Good skin care includes the following elements and are essential for everyone:

  • Proper cleansing with a gentle, yet effective cleanser. Cleansing should be done both morning and night. Your cleanser should be chosen to meet the needs of your skin type.
  • A good moisturizer. Even if your skin is oily, you need a good moisturizer. Again, you should choose one that is made for your skin type and your needs. For example, if you have oily skin and are prone to breakouts, you might still need moisturizer, but one that is very light and oil-free. If you are mature and worried about lines and wrinkles, you can select a moisturizer that addresses the issues of maturing skin.
  • Cleansers, toners, masks and scrubs. Depending on your skin, it may benefit from daily use of a good toner, and periodic use of scrubs, masks and other skin care cosmetics. Toners help to close pores and tighten up skin. Scrubs and masks can be deep cleansing and helpful with a number of problems such as clogged pores, build up of dead skin cells, and extra moisturizing needs. Other products may be specially made for acne-prone skin, for evening skin tone or removing dark circles under the eyes.
  • Good makeup. Choosing makeup that is right for your skin is essential. Again, your skin type and needs will dictate the type of makeup you should use. Don’t be afraid to try using color to perk up your lips, cheeks and eyes, but remember, sometimes less is more.

For each of us, beauty is a personal thing. Your beauty must come from the inside first, and then you can strive to enhance it from the outside. No matter your age, glowing beauty can be yours.

Beauty is Subjective but We all Want to be Beautiful

March 2nd, 2009

Each of us wants to see someone we think is attractive looking back at us in the mirror. But the keyword here is “we think is attractive”. This is so subjective to media pressure, fashion and society in general. In the name of beauty we are willing to take the risk to put stuff on our skin that we do not even know what they are. Just because an ad made some promises it does not mean it is the right cream or cleanser for you and your skin. The same way we choose our food, it is time we choose our cosmetics and do not buy into peer pressure.

However who wants to see reflection with wrinkles, dull skin, rashes or pimples? No one! Unfortunatly not everyone is blessed with healthy, vibrant skin. And at some point we are all aging.

May be it is true that beauty is from within and this were we have to look for it. How about looking in a mirror and seing the reflection of someone you like for her kindness, loving, generosity, enthousiasm …. is that what is beauty about?

You tell me what you think.

Simple and Practical Suggestions to Help Clear Your Skin

February 10th, 2009

In the midst of taking care of your skin, it can be easy to overlook some of the more obvious environmental do’s and don’ts:

  • Washcloths. Only use fresh clean washcloths. Use once, then launder before using again. Consider doing the same with towels.
  • Loofahs and skin-washing netting balls (those big puffy net balls). Wash every week in the washing machine with warm or hot water to remove the build up of dead skin cells, fungus, and bacteria.
  • Pillow cases. Sleep on one side, turn over and sleep on the other side. Launder before using again. Wash bed linens weekly. Buy a new mattress every couple of years.
  • Daily cleansing cloths. Never reuse a cleansing cloth in an effort to save money. Discard the used cloth after one use. This means you may need to purchase two boxes every month to get 60 washings.
  • Makeup. Purchase your own skin care products, foundation, and other makeup for eyes, lips, and skin. Use your own and don’t share. That way you aren’t unknowingly also sharing germs with a friend.

Make sure that your towels and bed linens are completely rinsed of all laundry detergent before using. You may need to put them through a second rinse cycle or use less detergent than the manufacturer recommends. To protect your skin from the additive and bleaches used in laundry detergents, purchase only those labeled, “free.” This designation means they don’t contain scents or bleaches. You also may also want to avoid using fabric softeners in your dryer as well.
